Valuables

When the girls and I were doing our devotions today, before we began I asked them to tell me their most valuable possession. I let Emily go first and without any guidance, she declared God her most valuable possession. Alana stated without hesitation and truelly genuine the same declaration. How my heart leaped to hear them believe that. I expected the answer from Alana. Emily on the other had, I was surprised with. As she has not made a true declaration. It was awesome.

(sometime later) I wrote the above months ago and forgot to get back to it to finish. But the whole scene is speaking to me. Every once in awhile, I become crazy. Ok, some would say "only once in awhile, Jess?"But really, I am talking more about the clutter around me driving me to the point, where I want to throw everything out the door and start over by only putting what we really need back into the house. Now is one of those times. If you think about it, what do we really need?

The age old ice breaker: If there was a fire and only had time to grab one thing from your home, what would it be? Most of us would say family. Let's say they were safe, what would you grab? Mike would say the computer. Great, it has a lot on it that I wouldn't want to lose, including all our photos. Alana says the cats, but if they were safe, she would grab her baby blanket. She says it has been there since the beginning and she wants it to stay with her. (Just to note, she doesn't use it or carry around or anything like that. She is just very sentimental.) Emily says she would grab her fuzzy wuzzy (teddy bear) and her old baby blanket. She reasons that they are usually together so she can grab both of them at the same time. (She cracks me up.) My answer seems the hardest, only because I have time to think about it. I know my main focus would be the family and the cats. Since Mike grabbed the computer, I would have all my info and our pictures. My purse would be an obvious one. Everything else can be replaced. Maybe not the exact same but enough.

So as I look around my house and stare at the clutter, I ask myself why is it here? If all that we need is what we saved above, why is the rest of it here? And if there was a major fire, and we didn't save anything but our family (and cats if possible) we would still have the irreplaceable. The Lord. He can not be taken from us and He can not burn up with all the things we bog our lives down with. He is a life that can be lost. For that matter, Heaven forbid, we lost everyone in that fire, the Lord is still alive. Wow. Praise God for this revelation. He can not be lost! The most valuable possession we have can not rot, can not spoil and can not die. Hallelujah!

So, don't be afraid to do some spring cleaning, because all that we really need is inside of us.
